State Breastfeeding Laws:

Map 1 note: Light purple doesn’t necessarily mean that it is against the law to breastfeed in public, there just isn’t a law in place that specifically states that breastfeeding in public is legal/illegal.

Additionally, there are several states that have unique laws regarding breastfeeding.  Some of these states and their laws are as follows:

  1. Virginia – Women are allowed to breastfeed on any land or property owned by the state.
  2. Louisiana – All child care facilities are prohibited from discriminating against breastfed babies.
  3. Mississippi - Requires licensed child care facilities to provide breastfeeding mothers with a sanitary place (not a toilet stall) to breastfeed their children or express milk.  Also, they must provide a refrigerator for storing expressed milk with a staff trained to properly and safely store and handle human milk. Each facility must display breastfeeding promotion information to their clients.
  4. California - The Department of Public Health is required to develop a training course of hospital policies and recommendations promoting exclusive breastfeeding and specifying staff for whom this training is appropriate.
  5. Maryland - Tangible personal property that is manufactured for the purpose of initiating, supporting, or sustaining breastfeeding is exempt from the state’s sales and use tax.
  6. CaliforniaNew York and Texas – They all have laws related to the procurement, processing, distribution or use of human milk.
  7. New York - Created a Breastfeeding Mothers Bill of Rights that is required to be posted in maternal health care facilities. New York also created a law that allows a child under 1 year of age to accompany their mother to a correctional facility, if the mother is breastfeeding at the time she is committed.

Breast Cancer Awareness 2013 Supporters…Who are They?

Already, it is October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Time to get out all that pink and put it on in support of finding a cure for this disease. As one of the most widely recognized annual awareness months, support and awareness is growing exponentially worldwide. We increasing support through athletes and their uniforms, businesses donating portions of their profits, people participating in walks and runs, and others showing their support in their own ways.

The Actual Purpose Of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

With all of the fun festivities surrounding Breast Cancer Awareness supporters, it is important we not forget what the main purpose of this month is for.

Breast Cancer claims thousands of lives on a yearly basis. It is the second leading cause of death among women, claiming the lives of about 20% of women diagnosed with the disease. Men, although it is rare, also are not exempt from being diagnosed with breast cancer. Every year there are nearly 2,150 men diagnosed. Of those 2,150, about 410 of those men are laid to rest as a result of losing the battle with breast cancer.

There is no cure for breast cancer but there has been major advances, largely due to the cumulative support efforts of society during these awareness months. We are seeing a steady growth in organizations in support of finding a cure for this horrible disease. This has helped create more aware and proactive people, resulting in more early detections of breast cancer and better treatment. This has lead to an increase in breast cancer survivors and a healthier world, when it comes to breast cancer.

Please join us in supporting Brest Cancer awareness month this October by wearing your pink, purchasing from businesses that support, and getting out to at least one event in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. If you have an organization, group, event, or just a comment, please leave it below. We and many of our users would love to know who you are.  Also, if you are looking for donations to your organization to aid in finding a cure for this horrible cancer, DRIACover is donating %5 of it’s sales to organizations in support of this.  If you would like it to be you organization DRIACover donates to, fill out the contact form and we will respond to you as quickly as possible.

First Official Photos of the Royal Prince!

Released less than 24 hours ago…here are the first official photos of the little Royal Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge with his parents, the Duke William and Duchess Kate.  These images were taken by the Duchess’ father, Michael Middleton, in the garden of the Middleton family’s home in Bucklebury, Berkshire.

The simplicity and beauty we see in these photos reminds us that although they are royalty, they treasure their family & new baby the same as we do.  Those of us lucky enough to have a loving family know first-hand how enjoyable it is to celebrate such a momentous event with loved ones close at hand.  We can clearly see how much they love little George and relate to their feelings of pride and excitement.  Seeing Kate & William so relaxed and in such a bucolic environment reminds us of why we love these unique royals so much.

Although we here at DRIA can not speak for everyone… we are SUPER excited to see some more photos.  We have already seen how Kate rocked the fashion world with her style and thrifty shopping.  Now we are starting to see how she has influenced maternity wear just by being photographed in few choice outfits.  The Royal Prince has followed in his mom’s footsteps and has already started a fashion following of his own by being wrapped in such a cute swaddling blanket after birth.  A few photos of the Royal Prince in his Swaddling blanket has started such a craze that the company announced they have a waiting list after selling out hours after the prince came out of the hospital.  Perhaps soon we may find Kate in her Dria Cover, breastfeeding the Royal Prince, or perhaps we will get a glimpse of the little prince wrapped up and snuggled in his mommy’s Dria cover ; )

Have you seen these pics yet?  What do you love most about them?  Leave a comment below.

Will the Royal Baby Boy be Breastfed Under a Nursing Cover?

Yesterday, we found out that after about 14 hours of labor, the Duchess, Kate Middleton, gave birth to a healthy royal baby boy who weighed in at 8 lbs and 6 oz.

Many of us probably received our first notification of her delivery via Twitter, but it appears that royal family decided to stick with traditions in the initial announcement of the little, Royal Highness Prince of Cambridge (the baby’s formal title).  They first announced the baby’s new arrival with an official bulletin signed by the Duchess’ medical team placed on a wooden easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.

It appears that the Royal family’s set on preserving their traditions while still keeping with the times, in ways they see fit.  This brings up the topic of, “Will the Duchess and Duke follow family traditions in how they care for and raise their child?”  Will they follow even widespread traditions, such as nursing their child?  If they do choose to breastfeed the little prince, will the princess do so in privacy, out of the public eye?  Or will the princess become a modern breastfeeding mother in public, with or without a nursing cover?  Also, will we one day see The Duke of Cambridge wearing his baby boy in a carrier?  We can’t wait to see what they do, how their decisions effect the maternity/parenting communities, and to just catch a glimpse of them as a family with their newest addition.

What are your thoughts?  Do you think the Duchess will breastfeed in public and have any type of affect on our communities?  What do you think they will name their baby boy?

3 Mom Gadgets She Can’t Go Without This Summer

With the kids out of school, and the smaller ones learning to walk…our babies get into more during the summer months.  We keep them safe by baby-proofing everything we can.  But there are some things we could use a little help with in protecting our little ones.  Below are 3 gadgets that every mom/parent would benefit from not only this summer, but all year round!

*Driacover is not an affiliate of any of these products or companies.  The featured products and companies are only viewed as potentially making our moms’ and babies’ lives safer and easier.

1.  Swimming Pool Alarm

This is a monitor/alarm that attaches to your child’s wrist, similar to a wristwatch, that will sound the coupled alarm in your possession once the child’s wrist monitor hits water.  Perfect for those of us that have multiple, busy little ones to keep an eye on and pools with an open gate or no gate are near.

2. Child Locator

This is another monitor/alarm that attaches to your child’s wrist (or to their clothes).    If your child drifts off more than about 30 feet, your alarm will sound.  Also, if you need to locate your child, simply hit a button to make their alarm sound loudly.  Awesome for those family outings in crowded places like the state fair, Sea World, Nordstrom’s, etc.

3.   Baby Seat liner

This is something that you mainly use in the summertime.  This is a liner that you can place in your baby’s seat to keep them cool and even-tempered on those hot summer days in the car, beach, lake, etc.

These are just 3 great gadgets that I came across that I would personally consider buying for my own family.  Do you have any helpful, awesome mom gadgets you use and would like to share?  Would you, or have you, used any of these?  Opinions?
